Fiber Optic Tutu

Technology Explained

Inspired by the combination of nature and technology, the costumes for the Waltz of the Flowers performed by the Brooklyn Ballet in their production of the Brooklyn Nutcracker, unfurl like a secret garden. The tutu’s combine a traditional ballet silhouette with lights and are constructed with fiber optics sewn onto layers of hand dyed fabrics. The costumes of the Garden Sprites and demi-soloists costumes surprise with hidden screen printed art that reveals itself under UV light. The garden comes to life with the glistening Dew Drop adorned with laser cut flowers in mylar and Swarovski crystals.

WithMe – Baby Monitor

Project Development

WithMe is a revolutionary new way to monitor your baby.  It is a small, repositionable sensing unit that attaches to your baby’s own clothing. It works seamlessly with your smart-enabled device to deliver vital information about your baby’s wellbeing to your phone or tablet.

WithMe uses the best technology available to keep you informed of your baby’s breathing pattern, skin temperature, activity level and body position, whether you’re in the next room or the next town. The wearable sensor collects and transmits this data to your mobile device along with affirmations that your little one is safe, or notifications that attention may be needed.  WithMe helps first-time parents feel like experienced caregivers.

Wearsafe – Personal Safety Technology

The Wearsafe Tag is an amazing peer-to-peer personal safety technology. In a bad situation, making a phone call is harder than you think. At the first sign of trouble, pressing the Wearsafe Tag keeps you a step ahead of the situation. It uses the power of your phone to alert friends and family, it sends them audio from the scene and starts a live chat room where they can coordinate a response or call 911. All while your phone, your lifeline is out of sight.

Interwoven partnered with Wearsafe Labs to create the unique shape device and a variety of attachment methods for the Wearsafe Tag.

BioWear – Kinetic Accessory

Design Approach

A kinetic accessory that communicates emotions through wearable technology.

Humans are uniquely able to cloak emotional responses, outwardly projecting messages that contradict our inner state. But what if we had tails, feathers or fur that signaled our true responses through biometric data? BioWear kinetic accessories collect the wearer’s physical data and use that information to manipulate their outward appearance, revealing the person’s interior condition.

As designers and artists, we are concerned with both aesthetics and the human condition. We designed BioWear kinetic accessories as beautiful adornments that bring us closer to one another through authentic emotional communication. As an extension of our physical bodies, BioWear raises questions about the future and the boundaries of communication through fashion, design and technology. The desirability of laying bare human emotion poses many provocative issues that this ongoing project explores.

Aura – Interactive Textile Installation

Aura is an interactive installation that uses Lumanit, smart fabric with embedded flexible glass fiber, that activates through sensory technology to display light, color and sound.

The installation creates a unique playful and engaging experience, exposing the audience to the possibilities of smart textiles. The development of this complex project relies on perfect coordination, involving many layers of inquiry from the smart textile and the programming to the tapestry’s design and the composition of the soundscape.

Remo Haptic Training

Project Development Process

Technology Development

What if you could download the muscle memory of a pro athlete?

Remo is a wearable haptic device that uses haptic feedback in response to real-time biometric data to help athletes eliminate inefficient movement patterns thereby enhancing performance and reducing risk of injury.

The company’s first product is geared toward cyclists because of a well defined need for maximum pedal stroke efficiency and a proven track record of significant spending for incremental performance improvement.
